Salty Life - The Hydrants - by Jennifer Vahlbruch

Galveston, TX | 2021

What it means to me

The hydrant stands firmly anchored in the sandy ground, surrounded by the salty scent of the nearby sea. Like the people who live here, it also loves the endless blue, the sound of the waves, and the freedom of the ocean. Day after day, it stands there, a silent observer of maritime life, ready to fulfill its duty, whether the sun is shining or a stormy wind whips up the waves.

Although it enjoys the comforts of coastal life, it also knows the disadvantages. Saltwater and sand take their toll, and sometimes stormy days leave their mark on its rusty body. But despite everything, it remains steadfast, defying every adversity, a symbol of reliability and steadfastness.

Like the people who live in this place, this hydrant has also weathered stormy days, sometimes with visible scars, but still standing upright and strong. Because, like the residents, it is firmly rooted in the land and the sea, ready to face any challenge that life throws at it.

The hydrant reflects parallels to human life. Like it, we sometimes face stormy times when life challenges us and shows its unpredictability. But just like the hydrant, we brace ourselves against the waves and the wind blowing against us, stand firm, and make the best of every situation. Because in the end, it is these trials that shape us and reveal our strength.
